Become a Qualified Driving Instructor
To become a qualified driving instructor and a DVSA-approved instructor, you must pass the DVSA test. This test is divided into three parts:
Module 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception
In this section, you’ll receive access to all the reference materials recommended by the DVSA. Classroom sessions will be available to help you grasp the syllabus, taught by a trained instructor who will also provide support as needed. With over 400 hazard perception clips and a range of DVDs, you’ll have all the resources to excel.
Module 2 – Test of Practical Driving
This practical section of the driving instructor course focuses on in-car driving. You’ll be assessed on a driving journey and receive additional training to improve your skills. After passing this section, you can start working as a Trainee Driving Instructor with the Lanes Group of Driving Schools.
Trainee Licence to Teach
Once you pass the first two modules, you’ll receive a provisional licence for six months. This licence allows you to teach pupils at a sponsored driving school. You will also need to complete an additional 20 hours of training within the first three months. During this period, you’ll earn as you train to pass the third part of the course.
Module 3 – Test of Instructional Ability
In this final module, you will receive practical in-car instructor training and classroom tuition. The course structure is tailored to your individual learning style. Training sessions are delivered in 2 hour blocks, allowing you to work around your existing schedule.

These are basic safety and maintenance questions about your car. You’ll answer one ‘Tell Me’ question before driving and one ‘Show Me’ question while driving. Our instructors will help you practice them.
If you cannot read a number plate from 20 metres away, the test will not continue, and you will have to rebook. Always bring your glasses or contact lenses if needed.
Yes, you can take your test in the same car you’ve been learning in. This helps you feel more comfortable and increases your chances of passing.
